A certification is free when nothing about it costs money: the course, the graded work and the certificate
itself. That rules out most university courses on Coursera and edX, where the material is free to audit but the
certificate is not. What remains is smaller and more useful than people expect: product certifications from
Google and HubSpot, Credly badges from AWS and IBM SkillsBuild, certificates of completion from IBM’s Cognitive
Class, project-based certifications from freeCodeCamp, Harvard’s CS50 family, Stanford’s medical-education
activities, one Google Applied Digital Skills lesson and one legacy Alison course.
Every entry below was opened and checked on the provider’s page on the date shown. The table lists only courses
with a free certificate; the ones with a paid certificate are on the
courses with certificates page.

What counts as a free certification course on this page
Every row in the table above passes three tests: the course is free in full, the graded work is free, and the certificate is free. That is narrower than most lists of free certificate courses. It excludes Coursera courses whose free option is a first-module preview, edX courses where auditing is free but the verified certificate is paid, Alison courses where the credential is a paid product, Google's proctored professional certifications and the AWS Certification exams.
Some providers qualify through part of their catalogue only. Harvard's CS50 family is here because the OpenCourseWare edition issues a free certificate, while the HarvardX courses on edX are not. Alison appears through a single course from the short legacy list whose digital certificate its help centre names as free, Microsoft Excel 2010; the rest of Alison's catalogue sits on the courses with certificates page under paid certificates.
How free certifications online are earned: exam, projects or completion
The providers here use three mechanisms, and the mechanism decides how much work sits between you and the certificate.
Pass an assessment: Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy
Google Skillshop pairs optional study modules with an assessment, and the certification is awarded when you pass it. Google Ads Search Certification is listed at 3 hours 40 minutes, while Fundamentals of Digital Marketing is a longer course at 40 hours that earns an award on completion. Skillshop certifications are valid for one year from the date issued unless the certificate says otherwise.
HubSpot Academy follows the same shape: video lessons, quizzes, then a multiple-choice certification exam. Inbound Marketing runs 4 hours 53 minutes and Content Marketing 8 hours 23 minutes. Most certifications are valid for one or two years, after which you take the course and exam again; AEO Fundamentals has no published term.
Build projects: freeCodeCamp and Harvard CS50
freeCodeCamp certifications are earned by doing: interactive lessons, workshops, labs and quizzes, then five required projects before the certification exam, which freeCodeCamp states is free and which is taken in its desktop exam app, one attempt per week. Responsive Web Design, JavaScript and Python are the usual starting points; no hour estimate is published on the course pages.
Harvard's CS50 courses grade problem sets, projects or assignments, depending on the course, usually with a final project. Score at least 70% on the graded work and you are eligible for a free CS50 Certificate at a unique URL. CS50's Introduction to Computer Science runs eleven weeks at 10 to 20 hours a week; CS50's Introduction to Cybersecurity is the lightest at five weeks and 2 to 6 hours a week. The same courses on edX are free to audit with a paid certificate, so enrol through the CS50 site if the free credential is the point.
Complete the course: IBM, AWS badges and Stanford CME
IBM's Cognitive Class courses build grading in: review questions typically count for half the mark and a final exam for the other half, with a passing grade of 70%, and IBM's terms describe a certificate of completion for students who show mastery. Python for Data Science is listed at 18 hours.
AWS Knowledge Badges and Cloud Quest badges need a free Skill Builder account; you earn one by passing a readiness path's assessment with a score of at least 80% or by completing every assignment in a free Cloud Quest role such as Cloud Practitioner, listed at 12 hours. Stanford's CME activities, such as Introduction to Food & Health, issue a certificate through Stanford's CME portal once you complete the activity and its evaluation.
How to verify a free certification before you put it on a resume
A certificate helps an application only if the reader can check it. The table marks a certificate as verifiable when the provider gives it a public check.
Google Skillshop issues a unique link and shows the award on your public Skillshop profile.
HubSpot issues a certificate and a badge you can view, download and share.
freeCodeCamp publishes each certificate at a public URL on freecodecamp.org showing your name, the certification and the completion date.
Harvard's CS50 Certificate is issued at a unique URL.
AWS badges and the IBM SkillsBuild Cybersecurity Fundamentals badge are claimed through Credly, where anyone can verify them.
IBM Cognitive Class issues a certificate of completion, Stanford CME certificates come through Stanford's portal, and the Alison and Google Applied Digital Skills entries publish no verification link either, so the table does not mark those verifiable.
Free certifications online by provider, skill and goal
Google lists 12 Skillshop certifications and awards, HubSpot 13 Academy certifications, IBM 8 courses and badges, AWS 7 badge paths and roles, and Harvard the 9 CS50 courses; freeCodeCamp's certifications sit inside the skill hubs. IT is the largest skill hub with 25 entries, then marketing with 21, digital marketing with 19, data analytics with 14 and AI with 14; cyber security, project management and healthcare are smaller.
By goal, free certifications for jobs holds the 57 entries chosen because an employer could recognise or check the credential, for remote jobs narrows that to credentials relevant to remote work, for your résumé shows how to name and link each kind of credential, including the ones without a verification link, and for veterans frames the same material around service leavers' benefits.
Where free certification courses online stop and paid certificates begin
This page holds 69 entries; the wider courses with certificates page holds 181, the difference being courses that are free to take or audit but charge for the certificate: every HarvardX, MITx, BerkeleyX, OxfordX and StanfordOnline course on the site, the Coursera courses that sell one, and Alison's certificate and diploma courses outside the legacy list. If the teaching matters more than the credential, the editors' picks ignore certificates altogether. See also Coursera's free courses with a certificate and whether a freeCodeCamp certificate is worth it.

Questions about free certification courses
What counts as a free certification here?
A course you can take in full at no cost whose certificate is also free. Most can be checked by someone else through a public link or a badge on a credential platform; a few, such as IBM’s Cognitive Class and Stanford CME certificates, are documents you show rather than links you send. Courses whose material is free but whose certificate is paid are listed on the certificates page, not here.
Are free certifications worth putting on a CV?
They show initiative and a verified skill, and they are most convincing when the issuer is the company whose product the skill concerns or a university. Employers can check most of them online. They are not equivalent to accredited qualifications or proctored professional exams, which are paid.
Why is a well-known course missing?
Either its certificate is paid, its free access covers only a preview, or we have not verified it yet. Every entry here was checked on the provider’s page on the date shown, and the list grows as verification continues.
