Which free IT certification courses issue a credential you can verify
Every record in the table above has a free certificate, so the useful distinction is what kind of credential it is and where it is issued. The 25 listed here fall into three groups: AWS badges issued through Credly, freeCodeCamp and CS50 certificates published at a public URL, and IBM certificates of completion.
AWS Knowledge Badges and Cloud Quest badges
AWS says its digital badges are free to earn and share: you register for a free Skill Builder account, complete the training and claim the badge on Credly, where anyone can check it. In AWS Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner (12 hours) and AWS Cloud Quest: Generative AI Practitioner the badge is awarded for completing every hands-on assignment in a live AWS environment.
In the Knowledge Badge Readiness Paths the badge depends on an assessment passed with a score of at least 80 percent: Cloud Essentials (21 h 55 min), Compute, Amazon EKS, Amazon ECS and Amazon Q Developer (5 h 25 min). Credly issues the Compute and ECS badges within five to seven business days.
freeCodeCamp and CS50 certificates at a public URL
freeCodeCamp publishes each certificate at a public address on freecodecamp.org and says taking a certification exam is free of charge. In the current curriculum you complete five required projects to qualify for the exam, then pass it: Responsive Web Design, JavaScript and Back-End Development and APIs work this way. The Full-Stack Developer Certification is a single exam for holders of the six core certifications and cannot be earned yet: freeCodeCamp's curriculum data marks it as coming late 2026. Foundational C# with Microsoft ends in its own exam after six sections completed on Microsoft Learn, and Information Security is claimed after its projects and is listed by freeCodeCamp as archived coursework.
Harvard's CS50 courses award a free CS50 Certificate, issued at a unique URL, for scoring at least 70 percent on the graded work; a verified certificate from edX costs a fee. CS50's Introduction to Computer Science runs eleven weeks at 10 to 20 hours a week, and the same terms apply to CS50's Introduction to Cybersecurity, CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python, CS50's Web Programming with Python and JavaScript, CS50's Introduction to Programming with Scratch and CS50's Computer Science for Lawyers.
IBM certificates of completion and the SkillsBuild badge
IBM's Cognitive Class pages state that a certificate is offered and that learning there is free of charge; IBM's terms describe a certificate of completion for students who have demonstrated mastery, graded in most courses by review questions and a final exam with 70 percent to pass. That covers Introduction to Cloud (6 hours), Docker Essentials (3 hours), SQL and Relational Databases 101, Prompt Engineering for Everyone, Deep Learning Fundamentals, Application Security for Developers and DevOps Professionals, Fundamentals of Encryption & Quantum-Safe Techniques and z/OS Networking Security Foundations.
The z/OS page also describes a digital badge, and IBM's badges page lists a Docker Essentials badge, but IBM does not price either on a live page, so only the certificate is recorded. The exception is Cybersecurity Fundamentals on IBM SkillsBuild (7 h 30 min): its credential is a Credly badge, listed there at no cost, earned by passing the end-of-course assessment with 80 percent or higher.
Free IT certifications for beginners: where to start
For cloud, Introduction to Cloud gives the vocabulary of service and deployment models, virtualisation and storage with no prior cloud knowledge; Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner then puts you in a live AWS environment with no prior experience necessary, and the Cloud Essentials path adds guided labs on EC2, S3, VPC, IAM and CloudFront before its assessment. For programming, CS50x moves from C to Python, SQL and web development and is rated introductory, Responsive Web Design starts with HTML and CSS with no coding assumed, and the Scratch course teaches the same concepts with blocks instead of typed code. For security, CS50's Introduction to Cybersecurity is written for technical and non-technical learners alike, takes five weeks at 2 to 6 hours a week and is rated introductory.
The Compute, Amazon EKS and Amazon ECS paths are rated intermediate and address solutions architects, cloud operators and developers, and Application Security for Developers and DevOps Professionals (17 hours) assumes you already code.
How free IT certifications online relate to paid industry exams
None of these credentials is an industry certification, and the records are explicit where a paid exam sits behind them. AWS positions Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner as a first step towards the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam, a separate paid product. Harvard offers each CS50 course with a free certificate or a verified certificate from edX for a fee, which Harvard says involves an identity-verification process and may be regarded by others as more authentic. freeCodeCamp's certifications are its own; the C# one was developed with Microsoft but is not a Microsoft exam.
What each credential tests before it is issued
The AWS readiness paths, the SkillsBuild badge and the IBM Cognitive Class courses end in a graded assessment or final exam with a stated pass mark. freeCodeCamp requires finished projects before its exam, and CS50 grades problem sets and a final project. The Cloud Quest badges reward completing every hands-on assignment rather than passing a test, though each assignment is built in a live AWS environment. On a CV, link the Credly page or the certificate URL so an employer can check it.
