Free Certifications for Your Résumé

A certification on a résumé is a claim that a reader may check, so the ones worth listing are the ones that stand up when checked. On this site, free certification means a free course with a free, verifiable certificate, distinct from a free-to-audit course whose certificate is paid; every record on this page carries a credential that can be verified by link, which is the first requirement for listing it. Choose with the reader in mind. List certifications that are relevant to the role, current, and assessed where possible; an applied-skills credential, a knowledge badge or a project-based certificate shows a standard was met, while a completion badge only shows attendance. Leave off anything expired, anything unrelated to the job, and anything you could not discuss comfortably in an interview. A short list of relevant credentials reads as focus; a long list of unrelated ones reads as padding, and recruiters say so. List them consistently. A dedicated section headed Certifications or Credentials works for most résumés, placed after experience and education unless the credential is the main reason you qualify, in which case it can go higher.

For each entry give the credential's exact name as the issuer states it, the issuer, and the verification link or badge address; the date of completion or expiry belongs there if the credential has one. Do not attach the certificate file, do not paste a badge image into the document, and do not inflate the name, for example by calling a completion badge a certification or a vendor product credential a professional certification. On a profile site, use the credentials section and let the link do the verifying. Finally, remember what a certification does not say. It does not show experience, judgement or results, so where you can, connect it to something in your experience section: the campaign you ran after the marketing certification, the spreadsheet model you built after the analytics credential.
