Which listed courses give a free AI certificate, and who issues it
Every course in the table above carries a credential that costs nothing, but the credentials are not the same thing. The 14 listed courses fall into three groups: vendor badges and certificates from AWS and IBM, free certificates from Harvard's CS50 and freeCodeCamp, and Google and HubSpot marketing certifications whose syllabus is about AI-powered advertising rather than AI itself. Each group is earned and checked differently.
AWS and IBM: badges and certificates from the vendor
AWS Cloud Quest: Generative AI Practitioner awards an official AWS badge once you finish all of its hands-on assignments, which the course page lists at 10 hours; you claim the badge through Credly, where anyone can verify it. The Amazon Q Developer Knowledge Badge Readiness Path ends in an assessment instead: AWS's badge page says the Credly badge is earned by passing with at least an 80 percent score, after 5 hours 25 minutes of self-paced training. Both need only a free Skill Builder account, and AWS describes its badges as free to earn and share.
IBM's Cognitive Class courses, Machine Learning with Python, Prompt Engineering for Everyone and Deep Learning Fundamentals, each state on their page that a certificate is offered on completion, and the platform's FAQ says learning there is free of charge. Cognitive Class grades most courses with review questions worth half the mark and a timed final exam worth the other half, with a passing grade of 70%. IBM also lists a Credly badge for Machine Learning with Python, but the site does not state that badge's cost, so the free credential recorded here is the certificate of completion.
Harvard and freeCodeCamp: free certificates at a public URL
CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python is assessed entirely through projects. Score at least 70% on each one and Harvard issues a free CS50 Certificate at a unique URL. A free edX account is needed to submit work; the verified edX certificate for the same course costs $299 and is optional. freeCodeCamp's Machine Learning with Python Certification is claimed after completing the certification projects in its final block, and the certificate is published at a public freecodecamp.org address. freeCodeCamp now files this course under archived coursework: the content is not being updated, but it remains available and the certification is still listed.
Google and HubSpot: certifications in AI-powered marketing
Google's entries on this page are Skillshop certifications about running AI-driven campaigns, not courses in AI itself. The AI-Powered Performance Ads Certification, AI-Powered Shopping ads Certification, Google Ads Search Certification and Google Ads Measurement Certification are each awarded only by passing the assessment; the study modules are optional, and Google gives you a unique link to the certification or badge. Fundamentals of Digital Marketing works differently: its award is for completing the modules, appears on your public Skillshop profile and can be added to LinkedIn, and Google's help centre notes that an award is not a formal credential in the way a certification is.
HubSpot's Digital Marketing Certification Course, Inbound Marketing Certification Course and AEO Fundamentals each end in a certification exam and are labelled free certification courses on their pages. If you want a credential in AI itself rather than in marketing with AI tools, the vendor, Harvard and freeCodeCamp options above are the closer match.
How to get a free AI certification without a technical background
Several listed courses assume no programming. Prompt Engineering for Everyone states no technical requirements, is labelled beginner and runs about 5 hours across nine short labs on persona, interview, chain-of-thought and tree-of-thought prompting. Deep Learning Fundamentals is concept videos only, about 3 hours, with no coding and no maths beyond intuition; its platform and library modules name tools such as Theano, Torch and Caffe, so treat those as historical context. AWS lists the Cloud Quest generative AI role at Fundamental level, and Google labels the AI-Powered Performance Ads and Shopping ads certifications beginner.
The technical credentials ask for more. Harvard lists CS50x or at least a year of Python as the prerequisite for its AI course, rates it intermediate and gives seven weeks of material at 10 to 30 hours a week. IBM's Machine Learning with Python lists Python for Data Science as a prerequisite and warns that its labs need working knowledge of Python for data analysis; the page estimates 20 hours. freeCodeCamp's machine learning certification has you build neural networks in TensorFlow, so it suits people who already write Python.
Do these free AI credentials expire
Some do. Google states that Skillshop certifications are valid for one year from the date issued unless the certificate says otherwise. HubSpot's knowledge base lists the Digital Marketing and Inbound Marketing certifications as valid for two years, after which you retake the exam; it has not yet published a validity period for AEO Fundamentals. The records for the CS50, freeCodeCamp, AWS and IBM credentials carry no expiry statement. What does change is the content: AWS shows a last-update date on its course pages, and freeCodeCamp marks its machine learning course as archived, so check both before you rely on a credential to show current skills.

The free data analytics certifications page covers the SQL, Python and statistics credentials that most machine learning paths assume. For a vendor's full set, see the Google, IBM and AWS certification pages. University AI and machine learning courses whose certificate is paid are listed on the data science and computer science subject pages.
