Best Free Online Courses (2026)
- 30 picks
- 30 free
- 6 providers
This is the short list: the courses we would recommend to a friend who has the time and wants the real thing rather than a taster. Each one is complete, is taught well enough to follow alone, and either grades your work or gives you enough exercises to grade yourself. The reason for each pick sits under its title.
The order is editorial. It weighs depth first, then teaching, then how much the course still holds up. Cost and certificate terms are shown as the provider states them and were checked on the date above.

Picks by subject
Questions about the picks
How are the picks chosen?
By the same three tests as every ranking on the site: how far the course takes you, how well the teaching works when you study alone, and whether the work is graded. Each pick has a one-line reason next to it. Nobody can pay to appear here.
Why are some picks only free to audit?
Because the teaching is worth it even without the certificate. Where a pick is free to audit, the certificate and graded work are paid and the row says so; the course material itself costs nothing.
How often does the list change?
Picks are re-checked on the same cadence as every other entry, at least every 180 days, and replaced when a course disappears or a clearly better one appears.
