Which free marketing certification courses are listed and who issues them
The 21 in the table come from two academies, HubSpot Academy and Google Skillshop, and both issue the credential themselves. Neither charges for the course, the exam or the certificate, and both give you a link or profile page that someone else can open to confirm the credential.
HubSpot Academy certifications
Each HubSpot course page is labelled a free certification course: you watch the video lessons, take the quizzes, then sit the certification exam, and passing it issues the certificate and a badge you can view, download and share.
The methodology set is Inbound (2 hours 45 minutes), Inbound Marketing (4 hours 53 minutes), Inbound Sales and Inbound Marketing Optimization. The channel set is Digital Marketing (3 hours 24 minutes), Content Marketing (8 hours 23 minutes, the longest), Social Media Marketing, Email Marketing, Digital Advertising and AEO Fundamentals, which replaced HubSpot's SEO course.
HubSpot's knowledge base lists a validity period for each certification: two years for the ones above, except Inbound Marketing Optimization, which lasts one year, and AEO Fundamentals, for which no period is published yet. You renew by retaking the course and exam before the badge lapses.
Google Skillshop certifications
Google states that Skillshop is available at no cost and that its foundational Google Ads certifications continue to be free of charge; the Google Analytics course page shows no price. On each course page the certification is awarded by passing the assessment; the study modules around it are optional, and access to the material is unlimited so you can retake at your own pace.
The Google Ads set is Search (3 hours 40 minutes), Display, Video (4 hours 1 minute), Measurement, Apps, Creative, AI-Powered Shopping ads (1 hour 15 minutes, the shortest), AI-Powered Performance Ads and Grow Offline Sales; the Google Analytics Certification is the measurement counterpart. Once certified you get a unique link per certification, and Google says Skillshop certifications are valid for one year from the date issued unless the certificate states otherwise.
Fundamentals of Digital Marketing (40 hours) works differently: it is a course of 17 modules rather than an assessment, and on completion you earn an award that appears on your public Skillshop profile and can be added to LinkedIn or shared by URL; Google's help centre notes that an award is not a formal credential in the way a certification is.
Free marketing certifications: how the exam and verification work
The two academies test differently. HubSpot's courses carry quizzes between lessons and a certification exam at the end; the Social Media Marketing course has 29 quizzes before its exam, while the Inbound course has four. Google separates study from testing: the assessment is one section of the course, study sections are marked optional or recommended, and the Measurement course requires a short pre-survey before its optional modules unlock. Verification is by link in both cases: HubSpot's badge can be shared from your account, and Skillshop gives a unique link per certification plus a public profile where awards can be printed or shared.
Google or HubSpot for a free digital marketing certification
The two broad introductions overlap in topic but not in form. Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing is labelled beginner and self-paced, spans strategy, content, social media, search, websites, online shopping, email and video across 40 hours, and ends in a completion award, which Google says is not a formal credential in the way a certification is. HubSpot's Digital Marketing course covers consumer behaviour, ads and social media, content and SEO, website, email and AI in 3 hours 24 minutes across ten lessons, and ends in an exam with a certification that expires after two years. Google's course teaches its own marketing tools in one module; HubSpot's lesson list names no HubSpot product.
Which free marketing certifications to take first
Start with the level the record states. Skillshop labels Display, Video, Apps, Creative, Shopping, Performance Ads and Grow Offline Sales beginner, and labels Search, Measurement and Analytics intermediate; the Measurement record assumes working familiarity with Google Ads and Google Analytics. HubSpot does not state levels, but Inbound is its shortest methodology course and the foundation the others build on, and Inbound Marketing Optimization is written for people who already hold the Inbound Marketing certification or run an inbound programme. Email Marketing is described as useful with any email platform, and Content Marketing is not a HubSpot-software course.
How these relate to paid marketing credentials
Everything on this page is a vendor credential, and both vendors also sell or restrict other ones. Google says its newer professional certifications are proctored and will require a fee, so they are not listed; Google Career Certificates are sold on Coursera as a subscription and are not listed either. HubSpot's software certifications for Marketing Hub, Sales Hub and Service Hub require a Professional or Enterprise subscription for their practical exercises, so they are left out. University marketing courses on edX are free to audit but charge for the certificate; they appear on the marketing subject page rather than here.
