Python for Data Science, course code PY0101EN and long known as Python 101, is Cognitive Class's entry-level Python course, offered by IBM's learning platform. The page states an estimated effort of 18 hours at beginner level, taught in English, and describes it as self-paced so it can be taken at any time. Five modules run in order: Python basics (your first program, types, expressions and variables, string operations); Python data structures (lists and tuples, sets, dictionaries); programming fundamentals (conditions and branching, loops, functions, objects and classes); working with data (reading and writing files, loading and saving data with Pandas); and NumPy arrays plus simple APIs. Hands-on practice happens in a Jupyter-based lab environment provided by the platform, so nothing needs installing.

Grading on Cognitive Class combines review questions and a final exam; the page notes there is only one chance to pass the course, although each question allows multiple attempts. The only listed prerequisite is basic maths. The course is free of charge and the page says a certificate is offered on completion. IBM also lists a Python for Data Science digital badge on its badges page, issued through Credly; see our notes on badges under the provider.

What you’ll learn

  • Write a first Python program using types, expressions, variables and string operations
  • Work with lists, tuples, sets and dictionaries
  • Control program flow with conditions, loops, functions, objects and classes
  • Read and write files and load data with Pandas
  • Use NumPy arrays and call simple web APIs

Who it’s for

Absolute beginners who want Python specifically for data work; if you already program, start with Data Analysis or Machine Learning with Python instead.
