Are IBM certifications free? Two kinds of credential, one paid tier

Cognitive Class courses issue what IBM's terms call a certificate of completion for students who satisfactorily demonstrate mastery of the course material; each course page states that a certificate is offered and lists the price as free. IBM SkillsBuild issues a digital badge through Credly, whose badge page lists the cost as free. What is not confirmed free sits elsewhere: Cognitive Class's Professional Certificate pages publish no price, and IBM's Professional Certificates on Coursera are sold under a Coursera subscription. Application Security for Developers and DevOps Professionals marks the boundary: its page lists it as part of the IBM DevOps and Software Engineering Professional Certificate, yet the course and its certificate are free on Cognitive Class.
How an IBM free course with certificate is graded
On Cognitive Class the certificate is earned inside the course, not by a separate exam. The platform's FAQ says that in most courses review questions are worth half the mark and the final exam the other half, that the passing grade is 70 percent, and that the final exam is timed. The Python for Data Science page adds a rule to know before you start: there is only one chance to pass the course, though each question allows multiple attempts. Deep Learning Fundamentals says it can be audited as many times as you wish; the graded attempt is the constraint, not the viewing.
Hands-on work counts toward that mark. SQL and Relational Databases 101 ends every module with assignments, hands-on exercises and review questions before its final exam; Docker Essentials is three labs and a final exam; Prompt Engineering for Everyone runs through nine short labs with quizzes. Labs run in a browser-based Jupyter environment; nothing needs installing.
IBM badges: which listed courses issue one, and on what terms
IBM's badge programme is administered by Credly: the badges page explains that your name, email address and badge earned are shared with Credly, which emails instructions for claiming it. Whether a listed course leads to a badge depends on the platform.
The IBM SkillsBuild certificate in cybersecurity
Cybersecurity Fundamentals is the SkillsBuild credential listed, and it is a badge rather than a certificate of completion. Credly's earning criteria are to complete the course and pass the end-of-course assessment with a score of 80 percent or higher; the credential is available to registered users of IBM SkillsBuild, which its FAQ describes as free. The badge description covers cyber threat groups, types of attack, social engineering, risk management, cryptography and how organisations prevent, detect and respond to attacks, with an awareness of the job market. IBM lists the duration as 7 h 30 min and offers the course in English and fifteen other languages. No other SkillsBuild badge is listed yet, because the catalogue sits behind a login and only this credential has a public page.
Badges attached to Cognitive Class courses
Cognitive Class's badges page lists course badges for Python for Data Science, Machine Learning with Python, Data Visualization with Python and Docker Essentials, and the z/OS Networking Security Foundations page describes its own badge, earned by passing a badge assessment quiz at 80 percent. No live IBM page states what those badges cost, so this site records the free certificate of completion for each course and treats the badge as an extra, not the credential.
How to verify an IBM credential
The SkillsBuild badge is the easiest to check: it has a Credly page that anyone with the link can open, so share the link, not an image. The Cognitive Class certificate of completion is a document issued by the platform; the course pages describe no public verification link, so this site does not record those certificates as verifiable. On a CV, name the course and its code, for example PY0101EN, and attach the certificate or the Credly badge.
Which IBM free course with certificate to take first
Levels and prerequisites on the course pages settle the order. Python for Data Science is the entry point at beginner level and about 18 hours; Machine Learning with Python names it as a prerequisite and warns that its labs need working knowledge of Python for data analysis, and Data Visualization with Python lists Python 101 and Data Analysis with Python as requirements. Data Science 101 has no prerequisites and no coding, for people deciding whether the field is for them.
Outside data, Introduction to Cloud needs no cloud knowledge, Docker Essentials expects no container knowledge, and Prompt Engineering for Everyone has no technical requirements. Two security courses are rated intermediate: Application Security for Developers and DevOps Professionals at 17 hours and z/OS Networking Security Foundations, written for users of z/OS Communications Server. Fundamentals of Encryption & Quantum-Safe Techniques is the beginner route into security at 3 hours.
Are IBM badges and certificates worth having?
The Cognitive Class certificate says more than an attendance record because of what sits behind it: review questions and a timed final exam with a 70 percent pass mark, and in several courses labs as well. The SkillsBuild badge carries an 80 percent pass mark and a Credly page an employer can open. Neither is professional certification, and neither substitutes for a project or a job.
