Free art courses divide into making and understanding. Studio courses teach drawing from observation, perspective, colour, composition and painting techniques, usually through demonstration videos and exercises you complete on your own. Art history and appreciation courses, often from museums and universities, look at movements, artists and how to read an image. Both kinds appear in searches for free online art or drawing courses. Museums publish self-paced courses and lecture series free in full and generally without certificates.
Universities offer art history and some studio courses on edX and Coursera; on edX these are usually free to audit, with videos open but graded work and the certificate paid, and this site excludes Coursera courses that only preview the first module. Non-profit and commercial platforms have self-paced drawing and design courses that are free with a paid optional certificate. When reading a syllabus, look for exercises with a clear brief, for critique or self-assessment guidance, and for a materials list so you know what you need to buy. Art suits complete beginners who want a structured way to start drawing, hobbyists returning after years away, and students building a portfolio for a design or fine art application. Graphic design and interior design have their own pages on this site, since those courses assume the fundamentals taught here.

Questions about free art courses
Can I learn to draw from a free online course?
Yes, if you do the exercises. Drawing improves with regular practice, and a course supplies the sequence and the vocabulary. Feedback is the missing piece, so pair a course with a sketchbook group or a forum where you can post work.
Do free art courses come with a certificate?
Museum and university lecture courses usually do not. Self-paced platforms sometimes sell one. A certificate matters little in art, where a portfolio is what schools and clients ask to see.
What materials do I need?
Most beginner drawing courses need only pencils, an eraser and paper. Painting courses list specific media. Check the materials list before enrolling so the cost does not surprise you.
