Introduction to Graphic Design

Introduction to Graphic Design is a video-based Alison course published by Adams Academy. Despite the diploma in its web address, Alison lists it as a certificate course. Its single content module, Fundamentals of Graphics Design, is split into six topics. It begins with colour: how colour wheels work, how colour is used differently in print and on screen, and what can be achieved by manipulating it. It then introduces the three most common design applications, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign, explaining what their tools and menu items do, with attention to Photoshop's selection tools and the use of blends. Later topics explain why a portfolio matters and what a good one contains, and finish with the process of designing a simple, professional logo, from concept to presentation, framed around a six-stage design process.

A course assessment closes the module. Alison rates the course Advanced Level, lists an average duration of 5 to 6 hours and marks it CPD-accredited; it is available in English and Spanish and is self-paced. Studying is free. The optional Alison Certificate is paid, in digital or printed form, and a free Learner Record can be downloaded after completion. You will need access to the Adobe applications to follow the software sections hands-on.
