UC Berkeley free online courses with a certificate: what it costs
Every BerkeleyX course listed here can be audited at no cost, and every one sells an optional verified certificate. None gives a free certificate. edX sets the price per course, and on these courses it runs from $130 to $200:

What the free audit track includes
Auditing gives you the readings, video lectures, discussions and ungraded exercises. It leaves out graded assignments and the certificate, and it lasts only while the course run is active, so you need to finish inside the run rather than coming back later. Each course card on this page shows the run length in weeks and the hours per week exactly as edX publishes them.
What the verified certificate is and is not
The verified track adds graded assessments and an edX certificate showing completion. Berkeley's own page says learners who want a certificate of completion or graded work must pay a fee that varies by course and platform. The certificate carries no University of California Berkeley credit; the university describes all of these courses as noncredit. If you want a credential at no cost, free certifications lists providers that issue one.
Prerequisite courses that are also free to audit
Empathy and Emotional Intelligence at Work and Mindfulness and Resilience to Stress at Work both name two prerequisites: GG101x The Science of Happiness, listed here, and GG201x The Foundations of Happiness at Work. The edX page for GG201x also offers an audit seat at no cost alongside a paid verified seat, so the whole sequence can be followed without paying.
How to enrol in a BerkeleyX course on edX
UC Berkeley runs no free-course website of its own; its noncredit courses live on edX under the BerkeleyX name, so enrolment happens there.
- Create a free edX account. You do not need to be a Berkeley student; the courses are open to anyone.
- Open the course page and enrol, choosing the audit option at no cost.
- Note the run dates on the edX page. Audit access ends when the run ends, and the only way to keep access afterwards is to upgrade to the verified track.
- Check prerequisites first: Fundamentals of Economics lists Data 8X, and the two workplace courses list GG101x and GG201x. How to Write an Essay asks for enough English to follow an introductory university course; the rest state none.
- Upgrade to the verified track only if you want graded assignments or the certificate; the price is shown on the course card.
What you can study at University of California Berkeley for free
The listed BerkeleyX courses cluster into three areas: psychology and well-being from the Greater Good Science Center, English writing, and Python with data science and economics. No UC Berkeley course in AI, cyber security, marketing or law is listed here.
Psychology, happiness and working with others
The Science of Happiness is the longest course here, at eleven weeks and 4 to 5 hours a week. It is labelled beginner with no prerequisites and covers what happiness means in research, social connection and kindness, and the mental habits that support well-being, including mindfulness. Bridging Differences is a course on dialogue across divides, with a focus on college campuses. It runs eight weeks at 2 to 3 hours a week.
The two workplace courses are short. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence at Work runs four weeks at 1 to 2 hours a week, and Mindfulness and Resilience to Stress at Work runs four weeks at 1 to 2 hours a week. Both are beginner level and both sit in the psychology and management hubs.
English writing for non-native speakers
Both writing courses come from Maggie Sokolik of UC Berkeley's College Writing Programs and are written for English language learners. How to Write an Essay builds from grammar terminology through sentences and paragraphs to thesis statements. It runs five weeks at 5 to 6 hours a week. Academic and Business Writing moves into persuasive essays, self-editing and formal tone for university and workplace prose. It runs six weeks at 3 to 5 hours a week. Both are beginner level. Python, data science and economics
Introduction to Python is labelled intermediate, with no prerequisites listed; it teaches functions, iteration, higher-order functions and environment diagrams rather than quick scripting. It runs seven weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. Data Exploration is also intermediate, and covers probability, averages, visualisation and simulation in Python for business decisions. It runs four weeks at 4 to 8 hours a week. Fundamentals of Economics derives demand and supply curves from data in Python, and lists Data 8X as a prerequisite, so it is not a first programming course. Do Berkeley's free online courses count for credit?
No. UC Berkeley describes these as noncredit programmes, and a verified certificate shows completion but carries no university credit. They are open to anyone with a free edX account, and instruction on every listed course is in English with English transcripts.
