Free accounting courses generally begin with the accounting equation, debits and credits, and the journal-to-ledger cycle, then build the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement. From there they split: financial accounting courses look at how statements are read and analysed, managerial accounting courses cover costing and budgeting, and bookkeeping courses concentrate on the day-to-day recording of transactions. University courses on edX are usually free to audit, so lectures and practice problems are open but graded assessments and the certificate are paid, sometimes with time-limited access. Non-profit and commercial platforms run self-paced accounting courses that are free in full and often sell an optional certificate.
Software makers publish free training in their own products, which belongs with the QuickBooks page on this site rather than with accounting theory. When you read a syllabus, look for practice problems with solutions, for a stated basis (US GAAP, IFRS or generic), and for whether the course is theoretical or aimed at running a set of books. Accounting suits small-business owners doing their own bookkeeping, administrative staff moving into finance roles, and students testing whether they want to pursue an accounting qualification. Free courses do not confer a professional designation, but they are a sensible way to find out whether the material suits you before paying for one.

Questions about free accounting courses
Do free accounting courses lead to a professional qualification?
No. Designations such as CPA, ACCA or CIMA require registered study and examinations. Free courses cover the underlying concepts and can be useful preparation, but they do not count toward those credentials.
Is the accounting in free courses US-based?
Often, because many providers are American, but double-entry principles are universal. Check whether a course states US GAAP or IFRS if you need one specifically.
Should I learn accounting or bookkeeping software first?
Learn the concepts first, even briefly. Software courses assume you know what an account, a journal entry and a reconciliation are, and the software makes more sense once you do.
