Practical Guide to Interior Design

This short Alison course, published by Training Facility UK, is about the working method of an interior designer rather than the history of styles. Module one, Basics of Interior Designing, introduces the principles of the discipline and the aesthetic and physical components a designer manipulates: lines, forms, colour, texture and space. Module two, Concept to Realistic Design, walks through a project from developing a concept to communicating it to a client and finishing the job. Along the way it covers technical drawing for customer presentations, the difference between professional and computer-aided presentation models, surveying a space, freehand sketching, building components and materials, writing a project brief and design proposal, and presenting to clients. A final unit introduces the basics of Google SketchUp as a way to develop concepts digitally.

There is a single course assessment at the end. The material is text-based, self-paced, rated Beginner Level and CPD-accredited, and is offered in English and Spanish; Alison lists an average duration of 1.5 to 3 hours. The course is free to study. The optional Alison Certificate is paid, in digital or printed form; a Learner Record is available free of charge after completion.
