6.005.1x Software Construction in Java is the first of a two-course MITx sequence on writing good software with modern software engineering techniques, available free in MIT's Open Learning Library. The course defines what software engineers mean by good code, meaning code that is safe from bugs, easy to understand and ready for change, and teaches ways to get there: testing, specifications, code review, exceptions, immutability, abstract data types and interfaces.
