Frontiers of Biomedical Engineering is Mark Saltzman's Spring 2008 course BENG 100, published on Open Yale Courses as 25 lectures of about 50 minutes and written for science and non-science majors alike. It introduces the field and its scientific foundations, then works through genetic engineering, cell culture engineering, cell communication and immunology, biomolecular engineering, cardiovascular and renal physiology, biomechanics and orthopaedics, bioimaging, tissue engineering, cancer and artificial organs. Case studies of drugs and medical products are used to show the development and testing cycle, patent protection and FDA approval.
The syllabus lists the textbooks used on campus and describes weekly homework, a term paper and two exams; none of this is graded for online viewers. Each lecture is available as streaming or downloadable video, audio and a searchable transcript. Open Yale Courses is free, needs no registration and does not award a certificate or credit.
