14.01x AP Microeconomics is a self-paced MITx Online course that introduces basic microeconomic principles and covers all the material required for the College Board's Microeconomics AP exam. You study how individuals decide what to buy and how many hours to work, how firms decide how many workers to hire and what prices to charge, and how to judge economic outcomes in terms of efficiency and fairness, including the proper role of government. The content is delivered through intuitive explanations, real-world applications, and graphical and mathematical supplements for those who want more depth. The units cover basic economic concepts such as opportunity cost, preferences, budget constraints and utility maximisation; supply and demand, elasticity, surplus, taxes and trade; production, cost and perfect competition; imperfect competition including monopoly and oligopoly; and the remaining AP topics on factor markets, market failure and the role of government.
MIT estimates 12 weeks at 4 hours per week, and you can start at any time. Auditing is free and includes the course and its materials; the certificate track, listed at $69 on the course page, adds graded assignments and exams and an MIT certificate on completion. MIT notes that AP is a College Board trademark and the College Board does not endorse the course.
