What you’ll learn

  • Automate tasks on their computer by writing simple Python programs.
  • Write programs that can do text pattern recognition with “regular expressions”.
  • Programmatically generate and update Excel spreadsheets.
  • Parse PDFs and Word documents.
  • Crawl web sites and pull information from online sources.
  • Write programs that send out email notifications.
  • Use Python’s debugging tools to quickly figure out bugs in your code.
  • Programmatically control the mouse and keyboard to click and type for you.

If you’re an office worker, student, administrator, or just want to become more productive with your computer, programming will allow you write code that can automate tedious tasks. This course follows the popular (and free!) book, Automate the Boring Stuff with Python.

Automate the Boring Stuff with Python was written for people who want to get up to speed writing small programs that do practical tasks as soon as possible. You don’t need to know sorting algorithms or object-oriented programming, so this course skips all the computer science and concentrates on writing code that gets stuff done.

This course is for complete beginners and covers the popular Python programming language. You’ll learn basic concepts as well as:

  • Web scraping
  • Parsing PDFs and Excel spreadsheets
  • Automating the keyboard and mouse
  • Sending emails and texts
  • And several other practical topics

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to write code that not only dramatically increases your productivity, but also be able to list this fun and creative skill on your resume.

Who this course is for:

  • Office workers, students, small/home business workers, and administrators would want to improve their productivity.
  • Aspiring software engineers who want to add skills to their programming toolbelt.
  • Computer users who have heard the “learn to code” message, but want practical reasons to learn programming.
  • Experienced Python software engineers can skip the first half of the course, but may find the later parts that cover various third-party modules helpful.
  • While this course doesn’t cover specific devops tools, this course would be useful for QA, devops, and admins who want to learn scripting in Python.

The course is a good introduction to the things it says it teaches. If you are already familiar with Python, the first half of the course will be painful to go through because it’s all listen and almost no doing. But if you’re not familiar with programming or Python, you will benefit from trying yourself and practising before moving on in each stage. I know the book online has exercises in it but this course would be 5 stars if it included the exercises and work through solutions as part of the course to prevent this from being just a 10 hour lecture. Overall, worthwhile.

I used the knowledge gained from this course (and some research of course) to build a small program that automates the task of reading, splitting, and renaming 6000 pages from a pdf file. That used to take 5 PEOPLE MORE THAN 3 DAYS EVERY MONTH!!!

I should say that this is the best start anybody can hope to get in Python or even programming. I do have some programming knowledge (VBA) but I’m not a programmer by profession. I never thought that I would do so much with python. I was always afraid that programming was for people with a computer science degree and IQ of 160+ 🙂 But I can confidently say now that it is for everyone who wants to learn it. With a little bit of code (ok sometimes it’s more than a little bit) you can work magic that does the job of 10 people. Thank you Al for putting this course together.

Very good but not exactly what I was expecting. The course needs to be touched up for me to say 5-starts.

I did get a lot of value from this course but I also felt like I had to spend more time than I had hoped troubleshooting certain sections. I will recommend it and hope to see some up-keep.

It is kinda outdated in some parts. What is more there is no homework you could do and later check if it is done correctly. But overall i am satisfied

I Love this course and I enjoyed it a lot. The Instructor did a great job of simplifying every concept. Although some of the commands are outdated, I was still able to finish every program by reading the updated documentation and searching some use cases. Thank you so much Sir Al!

It was well explained and really helped me automate some of boring tasks I was dealing with. It was my first Python course and I think it was good choice. Also I loved author’s sense of humour. Only thing which could make it even better would be some challenges and exercises. But I am giving 5 stars anyway.

Spot on for a beginner. Some of the stuff unfortunately doesn’t work (web scraping, pyautogui), but there’s help in the Q&A section to get around. Thumbs up!

Everything is good, it’s just some stuff no longer worked for python 3.10 like openpyxl for some odd reason. Thanks again!

The course was very well made, informative, and updated. I had some issues in the email module only. I would recommend it as a beginner/medium level of python programming.

Some courses are outdated near the end. Overall, learned a lot and good refresher with interesting things to do with Python.
