The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali are 196 Indian sutras (aphorisms). The Yoga Sutras were compiled prior to 400 CE by Sage Patanjali, taking materials about yoga from older traditions. The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali was the most translated ancient Indian text in the medieval era, having been translated into about forty Indian languages and two non-Indian languages: Old Javanese and Arabic. The text fell into obscurity for nearly 700 years from the 12th to 19th century, and began to regain popularity in late 19th century due to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, the Theosophical Society and others. It gained prominence again as a comeback classic in the 20th century.
Before the 20th century, history indicates the Indian yoga scene was dominated by the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Vasistha, texts attributed to Yajnavalkya and Hiranyagarbha, as well as literature on hatha yoga, tantric yoga and pashupata yoga rather than the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. In the 20th century the western practitioners of yoga elevated the Yoga Sutras to a status it never knew previously.
Scholars consider the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali formulations to be one of the foundations of classical Yoga philosophy of Hinduism.
In this course, R. Alexander Medin shares his interpretation of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. He translated the Sanskrit writings into Norwegian many years ago.

This is great! I have many different interpretations and versions of Patanjali’s Sutras, and these teachings by Alexander are concise, simple and easy to understand. I must admit that some of the deeper meanings of sutras have always escaped me. Alexander’s passion for and knowledge of the Sutras and Yoga in general are quite profound and apparent in these teachings!
Also, I’m inspired to perhaps plan a trip to Nosen Retreat in the coming year…seems wonderful!
Thank you and many blessings 🙂 Unju

I appreciate this course deeply. The wisdom and depth of knowledge Alexander shares is truly enriching. This is a eloquently insightful introduction to Patanjaliʻs Yoga sutras, BUT this course only covers the first 2 books, when there are actually 4 books total. I didnʻt realize that until after I had purchased the course, so that was a bit disappointing. It would also be nice to have handouts/pdfʻs available for download with the teachings and explanations of each of the terms to follow along with, but I understand the purpose of this discourse and know I can always listen to it again. Overall, this is a good intro course to understanding the deeper meaning of Yoga and I definitely recommend it!

I have tried to read and study the Yoga Sutras but this oral format is a much better way for me to learn. I will need to listen more than once. I also study tabla on YouTube with a teacher and it is great!

Great course! the teacher is very knowledgeable about his subject and presents the information in a down-to-earth manner that makes this ancient teaching relevant to our modern problems ..

It would be nice if the language used on the course was only English.

Sim. Muito proveitoso e cheio de informações
Tim Ruddy –
It’s a very basic teaching style, he’s just reading the sutras and explaining them. The wind noise on recording no. 13 is horrible! Very hard to hear and disturbing sound!
Andreja Cacic –
It’s a very good course and one can learn a lot when applying the right mindset.
