Genuinely new ideas on how short stories work and how to get them published, or at least ideas I haven’t seen before (and I’ve taken a lot of courses!). Some of the information on submitting manuscripts might be a little out of date, but the bulk of the course is on writing, and it is rock solid.
Luella Schmidt –

Thank you Jane for providing valuable information on writing Short Stories, and also for sharing your input, ideas, and all other areas that cover this subject and course. You have mentioned various writing terms that I have never heard before and provided resources that with giving students the opportunity to print, review and use these Writing Exercise Worksheets as an idea for a short story and also to the very end of ‘Not Giving Up’ with “Rejection”; Persistence is the key word.

This course is more useful than others I’ve taken on Udemy, but a lot of the information is redundant.
I had a hard time focusing on the content because it was presented as a slideshow and the instructor is present only in voiceover. For an online course, I kind of expect to see the instructor. Maybe it’s different in the UK, where she’s from?
The material was thorough and though some of it was recycled or common knowledge, the main area for improvement would be the redundancy. Sometimes the instructor explains the same point three times.
The best parts of the course were the beginning and end – how to sell your stories and how to edit your stories and promote them to a publisher. Those points are exactly why I took this course! Mid-course there is a summary of story structure that I found to be recycled but I suppose if someone was taking this course alone for short story writing, they would need this section as well.
Overall, I found value in this course. However, I probably won’t pursue other courses by the same instructor.

Very basic information, seems to be aimed at new writers who have never thought about story structure or submitted any work anywhere in their life.
