The Bible can often be a mystery to those who read it. There are various narratives which combine to make a great story. We have a great story, which is God’s story, which is then the story of creation, with humans in the middle of it. We have Israel’s story, called to be the promise bearing humans. The story then becomes focused on David and his family as the ones who are specially charged of ruling God’s people and bringing God’s justice to the world. And with this vocation there comes the parallel temptation to abuse the vocation.
Often, people wonder how the various stories, poems, prophetic texts, Gospels, and letters all fit together. And, indeed, they do fit together in ways needing to be understood by readers of the Bible. This course will unpack some of the questions surrounding the meaning of the Bible to bring a coherent sense of what is being communicated by the biblical writers. The Bible then, truly, becomes a Grand Story of God’s faithfulness.

NT Wright teaches us to look at the whole story of the Bible, the underlying story in order to effectively understand the New Testament. The app has a bug with Apple TV and won’t broadcast on my Apple TV. The Apple TV native app also doesn’t work. Aside from that, the iOS apps work well as does the web interface is a Mac. I haven’t tried it on a PC yet and have had only a little testing use on an iPad so far.

I like the content very much. However, the speed of the lectures required at least two listenings to get it properly. I would have preferred a course with more interaction – with both teachers and fellow-students. I also found the questions very tricky and was disappointed that I never managed to get more than 8 or 9 out of 10.

The overall course gives an important teaching of the Biblical story, and the story of the creator God and his creation. And how we can perceive ourselves in this story. It’s of course all focused on and through Jesus.
The lessons are quite packed with information, with a lot of references to the Scriptures, and it is not a course to rush through. Especially on the NT letter lessons it’s necessary to read the whole text, not only the little paragraph that is shared at the lessons start. Tom Wright retells, but I think it’s necessary to read it all.
