In this course, you will be investing in all your future writing endeavors. Professor McIntyre’s presentation and video quality are truly superb delivering a true classroom experience complete with handouts and quizzes. He shares his extensive knowledge and grasp of the English language pointing out where the differences are between how you and I may speak and how we should write.
Each lecture contains a thorough analysis of the rules, usage, and common issues people have applying the topic.
Each section contains at least one handout that provides a complete textual summary of the lecture and fortifies the subject with additional explanations, examples (sometimes containing bonus content), and practice exams with answers.
The section quizzes provide a means to measure your understanding of the topic as well as an invaluable tool to identify where you need additional review.
My frustration in failing a few of the quizzes helped me to identify my weaknesses, and through additional review of the lectures, handouts and practice quizzes, I was able to overcome my difficulties. My goal was to improve my writing and having this class as my hammer, I was able to nail it! This course is an invaluable tool taught by a skilled Professor, and contains a huge amount of information. Like any tool, you have in your toolbox you will need to keep using this tool.
When you take this course, be prepared to put the work into the course so you will get the most out of it. I strongly advise you not to skip any section or lecture and feel free to reset the quiz should you want to take it again. After this course, you will understand the rules but you have to practice applying them in order to improve.
The number one reason I love this course is that Professor McIntyre made the course fun! English has hundreds of rules that he presents and explains through examples and humor. His lectures are not boring and stuffy. He provided a solid structure on how I could to learn to improve my writing.
The only thing that truly mattered to me was improving my writing. Well… NAILED IT!!!!
P.S. As a direct result of this course my reading has improved too!

The course concepts are clear and organized in a logical order. The instructor’s delivery is engaging but a bit slow at times. I’m assuming the speed of the delivery is to make sure the concepts are understood. To help cement the concepts being taught, the instructor provides numerous examples, quizzes, and notes that can be read offline.
Overall, This was a great course that I would recommend to anyone wanting to enhance or ‘tune-up’ their writing skills.

I am especially drawn more towards this course because the tutor provides downloadable material as well, though I think test questions could have been more in number around 20 all the time than 5 or so some of the times… Take a plunge into the course its fun doing !!
As Iam already an ELT teacher & have been teaching for quite some time now (6 years or so) didn’t find much of newer elements. Moreover grammar has comparitively small perimeter so this was expected. If tutor could add some interesting activities rather than hard core grammar dosages, the course would get more teeth !!
But overall good still
Not editing my previous trail of thoughts…. certainly finding it more meaningful now especially while coming near the end..
Yeh after completing this I must say, the course turned out to be much more academically meaningful in the later stages…. not to insinuate that it wasn’t good before!!

Discussion and exercises are challenging but understood. Some of the quiz material are frustratingly hard to grasp. Was it intentionally built this way? i went to the Kahn Academy website just to help me get through a section in compound-complex sentences and skipped the quizzes after multiple tries with little success.

The Elements of English Grammar course is a fairly comprehensive introduction to the subject. It covers all of the parts of speech, their usage, and proper syntax. The course requires a long time commitment and lots of concentration, as the material is very detailed. However, at the completion of the course, you can expect to write in formal English at a much higher level that will improve your chances of success at school and in your professional life.

In South Africa, we follow British English rules, so some of the examples or rules in this course were not applicable to me, and in fact, would be to my detriment if I used them.

I loved and enjoyed everything about the course. The Prof was funny and entertaining, most of his jokes was not politically correct, but it served the purpose of being unforgettable examples. I learned a lot and will continue with other courses he’s offering in English. He is very very good.
Ps: An Ex- Rob Ford supporters, so that joke was not funny at all.
