Welcome to the COMPLETE Music Theory Guide!
This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take music theory (or music interest) and turn it into a usable skill. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.
For years I’ve been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I’m making for Udemy use the same syllabus I’ve used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory – and cost shouldn’t be a barrier.
My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understanding why chords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you’ve tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out – this series of courses is the perfect fit.
Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a “Mover and a Shaker,” and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.Â
This class is a Comprehensive class – it will have many parts, going through my entire annual curriculum.
This Edition of the class is the “Complete” Edition: It contains levels 1, 2, & 3 in their entirety.Â

Ralph Southerton –
Really enjoyed doing this. It made sense of things I’d only half understood before. Jason takes it easy, step by step, in a relaxed style – it’s just what I wanted. Looking forward to the next parts.
Evangelia Karakoliou –
Yes, it was. I had some previous knowledge from high school, which is a few years ago, and I am mostly a self-taught musician, playing several instruments. The theory helps to close the gaps, and the explanations were easy to follow, most of the time.
David Encastin Flores –
It was an amazing course. I was taking guitar lesson for about a year and of course my teacher taught me some music theory, but I was confused in many parts of some themes. Anyway I solved those doubts here, I saw a clearer learning path and of course I could go on my own rhythm, Jason always replies to all your questions and trust me, you will learn a lot from his courses. The only thing that I miss from learning with a guitar teacher is that it might be harder to apply that knolewdge to your instrument. But I really encourage you to take his courses and maybe later on you can take lessons with an instrument professor!
Michael Turner –
Very well prepared to teach music. I hope to learn more music from you Thanks al lot, I am sad it ended!!!
Tim Rayner –
I had a little bit of understanding from learning various instruments over the years (badly!), but this has filled in so many gaps in my knowledge. The course is presented really well, and the pacing and level of repetition was enough to learn the content without ever becoming overly repetitive. On to levels 4, 5, and 6…
Michel Claussenelias –
Dr. Allen has a very approachable style of communication that made this beginning course in music theory highly accessible. I am a concert level pianist and decided to take the course series to aid in more fully understanding the music I’m playing form a 360 degree point of view. This course was paced well and built upon the topics in a manner that was intuitive and aided in quick adoption of the concepts at hand. Great job Dr. Allen! I’m looking forward to taking the next course in the series.
Saffo Papantonopoulou –
All of J Allen’s courses are amazing! This is part of a series that is basically an entire 4 semester undergrad level curriculum in music theory. I’m really enjoying it so far and looking forward to continuing.
Oskar Repo –
The videos are easy to follow. My question was answered right away and I did not feel like an outsider.
David T Rodda –
I had a smattering of music theory picked up from piano lessons, but I didn’t really understand how it fit together for music composition. This course has helped me by creating a foundation on which to build connections. I also really liked the practical exercises so that I can analyze the chords in my music and understand the progressions much better. Many thanks. Great job!
Neite Lasuh –
I am very excited to learn from this course. Its indeed a great help for me as a teacher.
Michael White –
Excellent match. I knew a lot about this in school but lost the knowledge over time. This was a quick yet perfectly detailed way to regain music theory.
Calvin Hood –
Like a lot of Jason’s courses, he packe in so much information. I thought I knew a lot about music, but in these music theory classes, I found out that I didn’t know that much. He has filled in the gaps that I had and introduced me to a whole new world of music…I remember practicing scales when I was a kid taking trumpet lessons, but had no idea as to why the instructor wanted me to learn it…Now I know. I love how these courses have the worksheets at the end of the different sections, they really help to zero in on concepts…I bought all the courses on music theory after looking at the contents…Well done…
