Welcome to the COMPLETE Music Theory Guide!

This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take music theory (or music interest) and turn it into a usable skill. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.

For years I’ve been teaching Music Theory in the college classroom. These classes I’m making for Udemy use the same syllabus I’ve used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn Music Theory – and cost shouldn’t be a barrier.

My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts you can learn by just understanding why chords behave in certain ways. Once you understand those concepts, you can find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even invent your own. If you’ve tried to learn music theory before, or if you are just starting out – this series of courses is the perfect fit.

Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a “Mover and a Shaker,” and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.

The course material was good and the organization and progression was great, but the individual videos were a bit rambly and a little too off-the-cuff, with occasional errors (caught later, but confusing). It would have helped to have text on the screen from time to time, to highlight important points, ie. when listing rules of counterpoint, just to make it more methodical and easier to process.

Wow, I had no idea how helpful this comprehensive series of courses could be… I am a producer and a kind of producer who thinks learning the theory is essential to composing… I always thought learning music theory is difficult and maybe it would be but the way Jason teaches is quite engaging and probably because he is a teacher in college he actually knows how to teach. I feel so lucky to find this course. I even think of applying to a local music college because I feel like at the end of this course I will feel confident to be there… Also he has a lot of other good courses which I bought. Thank you so much for everything. I am so excited to progress and move forward…

The counterpoint section was rough, but now that I have started the next series of classes I can see why it is needed.

I think it could be taught a little more briskly, with preset examples, accompanied by graphics and text to reinforce what is being said, rather than everything being composed live and only spoken.

This would also make it more accessible for people who are hard of hearing, since the automated captions leave much to be desired.

That said, this was a more complete study of counterpoint than I was able to find anywhere else. There is room for improvement, but it is still better than most other teachers trying to approach this subject.

The material on the modes was particularly enlightening, and the modes make so much more sense to me now.
