What you’ll learn

  • By the end of the course you will be able to compose your own rhythms and melodies. This includes motifs, phrases, periods and phrase groups.
  • You will also learn how to develop your rhythmic and melodic material through a wide variety of compositional techniques.
  • You will get practice transcribing music (hearing rhythms and melodies and then writing them down in notation form).
  • You will get practice notating music using music notation software.
  • You will be prepared to study harmony and form in Music Composition 2

Music Composition 1 is the first course in a series of two courses that teaches how music is put together and how to write your own music. The course is divided into two parts. Part one covers the study of rhythmic composition. Part two covers the study of melodic composition. (Harmony and form are studied in Music Composition 2)

Course lectures consist mainly of video but also include some text. Each section of the course covers a particular concept (or related concepts). Concepts and compositional techniques are demonstrated throughout the course with real musical examples (pictures and audio samples).

Besides lectures, each section of the course also contains memory questions, section quiz, listening assignments, and transcription/composition assignments. Memory questions serve to summarize and reinforce key concepts learned, while the quizzes test the students’ knowledge and understanding of the material from each section. Students who take this course will get practice transcribing music (hearing a rhythm or a melody and writing it down). In the composition assignments students will get real life practice using the information and techniques learned in each section to write their own rhythms and melodies.

Who should take this course? Every student of music should know how to compose! It is a sad but true fact that most modern music teachers and music courses do not include music composition as part of the students’ musical education. In the past it was typical for students of music to be able to compose music. The “complete” musician can play an instrument, has knowledge of music theory AND can also compose! If you want to deepen your understanding of music, learn to write it!

Course Includes:

  • 190 Diagrams and Audio Samples (to illustrate concepts taught)

  • 125 Memory Questions (to reinforce concepts taught)

  • 90 Transcription and Composition Assignments (to practice the concepts taught)

  • 76 Listening Assignments

  • 21 Quizzes

Who this course is for:

  • Every student of music!
  • Beginning Composers/Songwriters
  • Composers/Songwriters with previous knowledge or experience who want to brush up and hone their skills (and maybe learn some new techniques!)
  • Anyone who has always wanted to learn how to write music!
  • Although this course uses many examples from classical music, most of the information and compositional techniques learned in this course can be used by musicians of any genre (including rock, pop, and jazz)

This course helps me to look at the song I am learning from a compositional perspective which makes the learning process more enjoyable and perhaps even easier.

Thank you, it is helping me see through the fog of composers music while singing or playing the piano and also helping me understand what I’m composing and what type of motifs and phrases I am creating. 😉

It’s not flashy and at times it can seem a bit dry, however the lessons are extremely short and get straight to the point with meaningful examples. What he accomplishes is quick and thorough, without the fluff. Highly recommend.

A good course but very dry. Needs a bit more on why you would use some of the devices and when , it sort of ties that together in the last chapter but talking about it earlier might have helped put the bits in context

On the one hand, I very much like the “bare-bones” approach the instructor takes in the class. I also liked having the little quizzes for each section to check comprehension of the material covered.

On the other hand, there are some things that (for me personally, anyway) would make the class even better.

    1) While the quizzes are nice, it would have been helpful to have worksheets with answers to get more practice (as they are in some other music classes here on Udemy). The composition assignments are fun, but there isn’t a way to check whether you’re doing them correctly or not. Having some kind of worksheet (when possible, not every topic lends itself to one) with answers would have been nice.

    2) Though the professor makes use of simplified examples from Bach, Beethoven, Clementi (those are only the ones I recall off the top of my head), it would have been helpful to have more “real world” excerpts to listen to. He does give listening assignments, but without much guidance as to what one should be listening for specifically. Short excerpts (and not just the simplified piano) during the lectures would have been great.

    3) Lastly, I would have loved more explanation of WHY the different techniques are effective/what they add to a composition, rather than just “here’s an example without X, and here it is again with X.” I understand that listening is subjective, but still, there was rarely a “this is why the second version is ‘better’ to most people…” type of explanation. Tying this to point #2, I would have liked something along the lines of “Let’s listen to this excerpt from composer X and notice the way s/he uses to make the melody….etc. etc”

Overall, I did learn very much in this course, but I feel that I have mostly learned terminology and how to find them in a score rather than what they bring to the table in terms of original composition.

I enjoyed the course and its structure. However, I believe that during the quiz there should be an explanation when the wrong answer is given.

So far covering aspects of composition I have some knowledge of. I’m enjoying going through and refreshing these parts nonetheless.

Through this course, i’ve been able to clarify
concepts that were merely vague and imprecise”.
Therefore, apply them to my own compositions immediately.

This course has re-enforced and enhanced my past study of reading music. It has simplified music theory in a very practical way. Thanks.

The course is very basic, some of the assignments are too basic for me and therefore a bit boring. I could also use more examples of different motifs to work with. No content on how to develop refrains/bridges.

Outstanding course! Very well organised and presented. Follows a logical progression in small, manageable steps, and explains concepts clearly with lots of illustrative examples, exercises and quizzes. Highly recommended!
