I have a DSLR and have been experimenting with it for years. I’ve read its manual, googled photography tips, and bought photography books. Most of the time I was left feeling both confused and intimidated by the technical information I found.
Steven’s course started with the basics of holding your camera properly and the secrets to great composition. I immediately felt empowered by this simple information. Inspired I picked up my camera and started practicing at my desk as I followed the lessons.
He moved on to camera settings in a accessible manner, chunking out the information bit by bit in a highly understandable way.
By the time he got to the more technical aspects of ISO and white balance (which has always confused and intimidated me), I felt comfortable enough with my camera and how it works to easily follow what he was saying.
This is a great course for the person with a DSLR that she or he never really got around to using outside of the auto setting!
Tip: Have your camera available so you can practice at your desk while you learn. Also grab your manual as the settings on Steven’s camera may be different from your own 🙂

I’d highly recommend following up with Bernie Raffe’s Become a Better Photographer I and II, which are well put together and explore these topics in much greater detail. I’d then follow it up with Tim White’s (Peachpit press) Digital Photos form Concept to Completion, which is a very good, multi-project based course.

A series of 2 or 3 minutes tips which are laughingly described as lectures. A lecture deals with a subject in depth and is substantial. this was a dissapointing waste of money for a few useful pointers.

The settings on instructors camera were different from my camera, very confusing. Needed more specific info on how to operate the different setting’s on the camera. Good basic info, but not what I was looking for. Suggest letting folks know what model camera the course is using. My Nikon has different settings than the instructors Canon.

This course gives some extremely well-thought-out information on taking better shots for the beginning or intermediate photographer–a few I knew (a few I only thought I knew). I think the course would be helped by a review of the “buttonology” for a few of the more popular cameras–for example, the instructor might have a Canon, a Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax, and a Nikon (or whatever) to show how one might quickly adjust the settings he is discussing (Aperture, for example; but especially the Special Settings), with a split screen to show the results–this is probably not enough teaching material to warrant a separate course, but could certainly prove enough for an appendix to the course if you didn’t want to re-record individual lessons. Trying to flip back and forth between this course and the manual for my newly-gifted S9900W so far has been an exercise in frustration!!!!!
Another alternative might be a different format of courses entitled something like, “DSLR Photography with xxxx Brand Cameras,” which could demonstrate how to make adjustments in older, currently popular, and high-end cameras and would be a great excuse for the instructor to play with all the popular cameras (“just to stay current and update the course”)–hey, I’d pay for a course for specifically my Fujifilm camera–and perhaps even more for my specific model!

It has examples, and the video has a good order of explanations. The topics are interesting, never dull or boring. It shows how he is taking the Photos, and he shows photos taken with the explanations. The sound is good and the examples are contemporary. I like it. It shows the ways the digital camera of photography has different ways: “modes” of taking the pictures, formats, speed, and ISO. I would like to know more about this issues, but I suppose that I have to experiment with my camera. IT puts examples of landscape, sports, portrait and objects. It explains the sections of a framing. I am good at taking photographs but technical issues I don’t know much, now I am starting to understand a bit of what the terms are for.
