Before you read what I have to say, see what our other students are saying about our course:
As Festival Producer with the Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) in Canada for nearly 15 years, I have experienced a whole lotta misinformation about what film festivals DO and I completely support the sharing of ACCURATE information in a non-biased way. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical about this course, titled FILM FESTIVAL HACKS. From the first segment, I was hooked.
Chris and Alex have created a fascinating journey that is relevant to both filmMAKERS and festival organizers. Chris’s experience behind-the-scenes at numerous festivals combined with Alex’s experiences attending festivals makes for a well-rounded and completely candid course that is less ‘instruction’ and more In the Actor’s Studio. A few chapters into it, I thought — (insert gratuitous coarse language here) EVERYONE needs to certify themselves as FILM FESTIVAL HACKS!
And the course reminded me that we (at EIFF) aren’t all alone on an island, hoping that what we do will resonate with filmMAKERS and that our annual event has VALUE for everyone — audiences included!. – Kerrie Long

Save TIME and MONEY by learning what film festivals are looking for and how to position your short or feature film to have a fighting chance of being accepted.
This is a LIVING COURSE, we will be adding to it and updating it often!
You will be taught from both sides of “the badge.” Alex Ferrari is an award winning filmmaker with almost 600 international film festivals under his belt. He’ll show you tricks and techniques on how he got his features and short films accepted with paying little or NO MONEY!
Here’s what legendary film critic Roger Ebert (which he met at a film festival) had to say about Alex’s short film:
“BROKEN is essentially a demonstration of the mastery of horror imagery and techniques…effective and professional.” – Roger Ebert (Chicago SunTimes)
On the “other side of the badge” is Chris Holland, author of Film Festival Secrets: A Handbook for Independent Filmmakers and festival organizer who has been on staff at two Academy-Accredited (Oscar-qualifying) film festivals.
Chris has also worked closely with the staff of more than 200 festivals worldwide, including Sundance, Slamdance, AFI Fest, SXSW, and many more. Over the last decade he has consulted on festival strategy with hundreds of filmmakers just like you and helped them take control of their run on the festival circuit.

Some of the info is available for free on podcasts, etc but this is well worth the price I paid. It’s valuable to have ‘all’ the info in one spot as that makes it easy to review going forward.

I would have liked the instructor to go a bit further in some of the subjects, but overall, it’s a great course with tons of useful information for beginners.
Kerry Patten –
A good overall discussion about what you can benefit from when attending and submitting to a festival. It would be better if it was a bit more interactive.

The filming is very poor, and for professional film makers that is sad. The lighting, the composition, the sound quality, the background….everything reflects total amateurs in the shot and production, or perhaps Alex and Chris were disinterested. My point is, if you do anything, even a handshake, its got to be the best in the world at that point in time. Uptil now this has been just talking heads downloading…hope it gets better. In terms of content, the intro has been too long, no script, no bullet points, no summary at the end….guy’s, go watch an e module and then merge it with the knowledge you have.
It gets slightly better from the above point, but those points remain

The course is shaped as lectures chopped up in 5-15min blocks. This makes it very easy to digest. Information is conveyed through discussion and conversation rather than formal teacher – student instructions. So pay attention, some of their best advice is just mentioned in passing.
I’m halfway through the course now and already feel more empowered and equipped to have a strategic and focused festival run for my short instead of just submitting randomly.
They mention a lot of beginner mistakes, which I probably would have made without this course. Besides stopping you from making them, they take it to the next level and share how to make the most out of your festival run for the least amount of money.
As a first time film maker, who didn’t think about festivals in the development stage (which they also address), I give this course my best recommendations.
Perfect for my skinny wallet too, the $30 has definitely been a great investment. Thanks for sharing your knowledge guys!

The instructors are well-versed and have hands on experience, so there’s a lot of solid material here. It’s good to hear all these different perspectives and points, many of them I wasn’t aware were even issues at all. The practical ideas and advice are helpful also.
Paul Mahoney –
I personally found the podcasts more useful than the festival strategies. Festival strategies would have been nice if they had used graphics, lists or not repeated info. so much.
Samik Bhattacharya –
Quite liked it. Interesting pointers to keep in mind as a beginner as well as a seasoned filmmaker trying to break into the film-festival scene. Covers technicals too – which is an easter egg!
Carol Brook –
It is inspiring me. Makes me see what I did wrong and right at past film festivals
Sheldon Woodson –
Everything I wanted to know. Thank you!!
