Cinematography is the art of making motion pictures. In this course, we are going to talk about all the fundamentals that go into Cinematography and what makes a great cinematographer. This course is instructed by an industry professional who has been in the business for over 16 years, Matt Whiteman. With his knowledge and experience, Matt is going to go through the vast subject that is Cinematography starting with cameras and all the different components of cameras; type of cameras, lenses and the tripod. He will introduce and demonstrate basic lighting and lighting control. The role of director of photography, also known as the cinematographer, will also be introduced.

Took me a while to get into the teaching style, this guy is not a lecturer, he is a time served and very experienced professional who is a master of his craft. Doing this course was not like sitting in front of a lecturer who was reading off of cue cards, this was more like an apprenticeship with an experienced expert, it was like being in the studio with him on a one-to-one basis. Very in-depth with real-world examples, you can’t do better than learn from someone who has been there and done it and this guy has.

This course is full of useful information. The instructor has a lot of knowledge of the equipment, and the proper applications and uses for the equipment. That being said, this course is simply that, a lot of information. If you are looking for hands on exercises or tutorials there aren’t any here. There are no exercises for building skill or getting hands on experience. I found the information helpful, but would have liked to have had some hands on exercises skill building approaches involved with this course.
