As China, a nation of long-standing and rich culture tradition rises to be the economic magnate of the world, Chinese has become the second most learned foreign language
in American middle schools, high schools and universities. Chinese is the
language of business and management, government and education, politics and
diplomacy, as much as the language of literature and philosophy. Being
proficient in spoken and written Chinese would win you a prominent advantage in
career opportunities in today’s world.
Are you a college student or adult open learner who cherished the hope to study college Chinese but hampered by the lack of time and exorbitant tuition to learn in a classroom setting? This course is a perfect answer to your dilemmas: In as short as two months, you can learn the same range of vocabulary, grammar and situational dialogues, and achieve the same degree of proficiency as a classroom student enrolled for a whole year’s College Chinese Curriculum at beginners’ level. She had twice more than doubled the classroom Beginning Chinese Course enrollment in just one year. This course adopts the same methodology and simulates the same degree of student-teacher interaction as she has taught at College classroom setting for years.
This course is exceedingly thorough, methodological, and systematic, as well as easy and entertaining. It has 8 sections and 165 lectures, altogether 18 hours. Who this course is for:
- Such a course is perfect for college undergraduate and graduate students as well as adult open learnerswho have no time and enough financial resources to study Chinese in the classroom setting. They would acquire the same degree of proficiency in two months as those classroom students who studied one year in a classroom setting, thus speed up their learning process, at the same time save tens of thousands of dollars in tuition. Since the course is based on the same range of vocabulary, grammar and situational dialogue topics as college Chinese in most universities, they can be advantageously placed in placement test, even if in the future they want to take higher level of Chinese in classroom setting. As a professor of Chinese who taught for 16 years at prestigious liberal arts colleges and universities, my teaching methods in this online course is exactly the same as I conducted classroom teaching for years.
- This course is also terrific for middle school and high school students who are learning or want to learn Chinese. Secondary school Chinese classes are usually too slow-paced and taught with different range of vocabulary, grammar and dialogues from that of college Chinese, which make these students be placed at a great disadvantage in the college placement tests of Chinese when they go to college. Sometimes, 4-6 years of learning Chinese at secondary school level only amounts to less than 1 year at college level. This course prevents such waste.
- Because this course is exceedingly systematic, thorough and methodological in introducing Chinese sound system, writing system, character stroke orders, grammar and various performance of daily conversation, any learner of Mandarin Chinese, above the age of 10, would greatly benefit from learning this course. The use of hundreds of entertaining powerpoint images bring teaching, reviewing, testing and application into a quick circulation, similar to the immersion learning mode when students have to be highly alert to learn, remember, apply, and perform functionally in quick succession. it simulates classroom interaction between the students and the teacher through exercises (describing pictures, answer questions about texts or pictures, translating using learned vocabulary and grammar ) following introduction of language knowledge at every short turn.
- For students or adults who are learning Chinese in the classroom, this course also provides additional reviewing materials and strengthens your language ability and performative level.

This is a very comprehensive course in basic Chinese. I’d like to give the course 5 stars, but it is let down slightly minor mistakes throughout the course and a sometimes slightly annoying habit of introducing words in sentences that the course hasn’t covered yet. In these cases I found myself resorting to Google Translate and other resources to fill in the gaps. In some ways this is a good thing, as it forces the learner to investigate further. But perhaps it would have been nicer learning experience to not have to do that.
But the small annoyances aside, I don’t think I’ve seen such a in-depth beginners course of Mandarin. If you’re prepared to invest a bit of time you’ll really get a lot out of this course. Well worth the money.

I like the material. I’ve printed everything for later reference and use. This is my first course in Mandarin. I don’t have the chance to speak to anybody in Mandarin right now, but I plan to keep using the professor’s material and portal.

I am not a complete beginner . In fact I had started with the intermediate class. Because I found some very valuable info about the grammar in particular, information I had not found anywhere else, I decided to also purchase the other courses starting with the beginner one. Of course I go faster through this beginner course, but even then it is very valuable: timely explanations on the Chinese grammar and usage, practical examples and situations. I only wish I had known about these courses earlier!

This course is full with information. It is very densed. For a very motivated person, this is a very valuable course. But for the casual learner, the delivery might be boring. However, comparatively, it covers more vocabulary and more grammar, with full of pronunciation demonstration.

This is the absolute best course on Udemy to learn Mandarin Chinese. An entire semester University course at a fraction of the cost. I keep coming back to it over and over again and am always amazed at how much I have learned. Well done Hong Laoshi! Thank you!

Personally thought this was a very good beginners course! There is a lot of course content and I like how it was broken down into vocab, grammar and dialogue. As others noted, some vocabulary that is used is not presented in the vocabulary sections at the beginning but that doesn’t really take anything away from the course. Even though you spend a little extra time looking up words but it helped me with my listening comprehension. I did wish for some of the grammar sections to have more explanation. But for the price, the course provided a lot of information.

Could be better.
As a foreigner beginner to chinese, this teaching is too difficult to understand.
1 surprises in most lessons — suddenly there are unknown words introduced eg. ‘de’ and so many.
2 Font size is so small for chinese characters, even in full screen its difficult to distinguish.
3 Pinyin is absent most of lessons or english meanings are not given.
4 Complex words/characters are introduced without reference to any previous teaching.
5 Grammar questions are asked on pdfs and answers are only spoken out, no answers are available in writing. so you cannot refer anything later for study.
6. you have to keep google ready to find pinyin and characters for a lot of words
the course is as good as reading some chinese learning book by self.
the instructor may have put in lot of effort in making, but may not be too useful for beginners.

Very well rounded course, learned a lot and the tests really helped me apply myself.

I feel the instructor is someone who is very knowledgeable and I am looking forward to learn all that I can.
The only thing I have an issue with is the fact that Section one has a promo video. I get it is suppose to advertise the course and that is fine but the actually introduction video essentially repeats the same thing except now it is the instructor talking. I think the promo video should only be available before someone buys the course as a way of letting us know just what the course entails.
