This is a great course for high-level basics in general accounting. There are a lot of examples both on the slides and also described verbally. As an experienced A/P Manager, many of these topics I was already familiar with but having had 20 years since taking accounting in college (accounting was not my major), it really helped me to regain knowledge of these basics.
Ironically, I felt like the part I was most experienced with (A/P, expenses) was the part that was just glossed over. The majority of the course seems focused on the balance sheet, and very little on the income statement. It is all tied together at the end with the accounting equations at the end, but since the examples used throughout the course are random and unrelated, the student isn’t able to very easily see patterns in the financials to understand what these calculations can mean. It is well discussed in many cases, but doesn’t tie the course together. In other words, each lesson can stand independently because they are not dependent on each other.
The other major item left out of this course is debits and credits Occasionally, the instructor notates what the debit and credit should look like, but there is absolutely no discussion on this concept or how it works. For financial analysis, this is not a major issue, but for bookkeeping, it absolutely is necessary and I feel like including the work “bookkeeping” in the title of the course is misleading because of this.
Overall, this is good course for someone needing the basics of accounting, but if you are planning on working in this field, you will definitely need additional courses.
