I’m completely new to video game development and am really happy to have found this course. Each section was very interesting and fun to do and all the different lecturers were awesome. In the beginning I didn’t know anything about C++ or Unreal and now I feel a lot more knowledgeable about it. Whenever I got stuck, and I did get stuck quite a lot, there was always somebody there to help me with any issues, and they were very patient as well. I am very grateful for all their help, it is very much appreciated. I feel like I’ve learned a lot and have enjoyed doing the course a lot.

The majority of the course was fantastic. The course where we created the toon tanks game was by far the least helpful of any course.
It was all just do do do… not enough pauses to challenge the student and let them come to their own conclusions. Also, very little explanation for why you would do things. I am a seasoned developer, and found this entire section to be frustrating.
Without the toon tanks section, I would rate this course a 5-star.
Denis Kovzan –
Good course for the beginners. Bad explanation and too fast pace on the one of the project (ToonTanks), but this project is in the process of remastering and a bunch of lectures are already there.

If you’re here for a course that’ll make you learn unreal, then congratulations! This course is absolutely for you. The instructors have done a great job to make the concepts as clear and simple as they can, they’re very hard working. Trust me, this is worth the time and money. And you get the support of amazing teachers and a thriving community. I’m halfway through this course and it’s safe to write my review now.
Thanks!!

I thought the first part of the course, building a text-based number game, went very well. I worked through the second part of the course, the Bull Cow game, and although I did learn a lot, I ran into some technical issues along the way that took some pretty extensive troubleshooting. There was a lot of information in the course and the instructors definitely know what they’re talking about. I thought there could have definitely been more setup instructions in the course that would have helped me ensure that I did not run into unnecessary errors. Thanks for reaching out. Cheers.
Edit : After finishing the 3rd, 4th and 5th sections of this course I am really impressed by the quality of the lessons. I have already learned so much and I really enjoy the instructors’ teaching styles. I definitely suggest the course.
P.S. The technical issues I originally ran into in the 2nd section of the course were due to Unreal Engine version incompatibility. If you are looking to take the course be sure you’re using the same version of Unreal as the instructor.
Further Edits : Tons of amazing info. Sections 4 and 5 (Building Escape, Toon Tanks v2) are extremely professionally taught. The sections provided great opportunities to take notes and plenty of time to follow along with what was being shown on screen. The other sections lack somewhat; some of it was not edited and obvious mistakes were left in, leaving an unprofessional feel. Speed of course varies from slow and deliberately taught to rocket fast. The community on the gamedev.tv forums is a good place to go to ask questions. Overall, I am really thankful that courses like this exist. You can’t argue with over 100+ hours of teaching content for the price. I highly suggest this course but also would advise any students to not become too intent on understanding every concept presented; rather do the course for the experience you’ll gain with the engine and with the programming in producing these really fun and rewarding learning experiences.

I always wondering how game development works and this course basically give me the exposure on what are the structures involved in game development. Pick up some new knowledge in programming language and overall I enjoyed and learned a lot throughout this entire course.
Aditya Tomar –
Awsome course, learned a lot, deducting 1 star for the toon tanks experience, hoping that new toon tanks will take care of the mess of the current one

I already knew C++ well coming into the course and the first 8 or so hours have been a review of very basic C++. I’ve learned a little about Unreal Engine here and there, which makes it hard for me to skip the Bull Cow game videos which are largely a review for me. It would be nice if there were no tidbits of Unreal Engine knowledge in the Bull Cow game so I didn’t have to spend hours watching videos that were largely C++ review.
The Building Escape lectures are somewhat more informative, but certain things were left unexplained. For example, the instructor put most member functions into the public member section, but they seemed like they should more appropriately be private.
The Toon Tanks section seems to be the best organized and is well done over all.
The Simple Shooter section seems to repeat a fair amount of what was in the toon tanks section.
The course doesn’t seem to cover anything about menus or other UI other than to display small amounts of information in a HUD
Jens Hedenskog –
The course was great, but I would have loved if you didn’t teach C++ at the same time. If I already feel very confident in C++ and only come for the Unreal part, some sections were excrutiatly slow and tedious. Otherwise, well done!

Edit: Since Udemy forced me to review prior to even finishing the first course section, I have given it a 4 star review because I have done the other GameDev.tv courses and they have been marvelous. I’m just speedrunning through the rest of the content now and then I’ll give it a true and fair review. I expect 5 stars will come your way and that nothing is missing though but blame Udemy for the early (incomplete) review đ

This course was one of the most thorough overviews of Unreal Engine. It also frames the course for someone looking to understand/practice C++ concepts and skills.

Gamedev.tv’s courses are consistently informative and actively engage students to participate in the learning process with challenges, quizzes and community discussions. They cover a broad range of topics and walk you through common scenarios you may encounter in your future career as a game dev. This Unreal 4 course does a good job of melding in the C++ with the UE4, and also touches on blueprints.
