What you’ll learn

  • By the end of this course, you will have full confidence using your DSLR to 100% of its potential, and you will be surprisingly far down the road in your personal journey as an artistic photographer of the natural world.
  • In this course, you will learn what you actually need to know about your DSLR in CAMERA CLASS, how to begin seeing Light in the PHOTOGRAPHY section, and how to continue learning for a lifetime in my PROBLEM SOLVING section.

Paul’s motivational JUMPSTART into the world of outdoor photography is a unique blend of practical hands-on lecture, ideas for creative inspiration, and Q and A from a live audience who asks the questions you want to know. Count on having a lot of fun learning from Paul’s vibrant teaching style, and then get outside on your next adventure taking great photos!

This is an ongoing photography course, and you have lifetime access. New illustrations and assignments will be added to this course as it becomes available or as needed for explanation. If you have something you want to see, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I am here to launch you as far as I can into this wonderful world of wilderness photography!

For those of you who don’t have 6-weeks to sit in a boring classroom, we’ll do it all in ONE DAY!

This course is for beginners who are serious about learning it right and in a tangible way the first time. This is not for casual shooters who just want to take a better snapshot of their family. This is for those who want to really be artists with their camera.

You will need to have your camera out in front of you. Be prepared to practice, practice, practice as the course progresses.

I deliver this time-tested Jumpstart course in three sections; CAMERA CLASS, PHOTOGRAPHY, and PROBLEM SOLVING.

– CAMERA CLASS: You have to learn this gadget before you can create those artistic masterpieces of this wild planet. Look forward to getting off of that pesky green Auto setting forever after this morning session.

– PHOTOGRAPHY: It’s all about the Light, baby!

– PROBLEM SOLVING: After this section, “When you’re photographing on your own, and there’s no one to look over your shoulder and critique, you can basically teach yourself.”

This is a one-day intensive course. Although, you can break it into two days to allow more time for everything to digest. Either way, most importantly, TRY everything we cover on YOUR OWN CAMERA as you progress through the course. Don’t take tons of notes… JUST TRY IT!

Join Paul in this LIVELY ongoing classroom experience. The flame of passion you currently have for photography will be fanned into a blazing inferno.

Who this course is for:

  • Anyone who doesn’t have the time or desire to sit in a classroom for 6-weeks at a community college, but does want to learn the fundamentals right the first time from a pro with a focus on the outdoor landscape.
  • Recent retiree (or other) who has a nice camera and wants to get serious about using it in the context of travel, wildlife, or the outdoor landscape.

The enthusiasm that Paul shows for photography is enough to inspire anyone to pick up a camera and give it a go. I have dabbled in photography for many years, but have not had any education since before digital photography was available. This course taught me more than I imagined it would and has renewed my confidence with my camera. I have never been excited about ISO or White Balance and now I can’t wait to play with those setting as I head to Europe in the coming weeks. I have sneaking suspicion I will be showing Paul some awesome photos when I return thanks to this class.

Technical concepts like f-stops and ISO are explained in new and fresh ways using interesting and easy to understand examples. Understanding what really goes on inside your camera will not only lead to making better photographs but will build your self confidence in being a photographer.

Paul really makes photography concepts easy to understand. This course is packed with great information on everything from how to use a camera, to how to frame a shot, to how to work with lighting. For every new piece of information Paul discusses, he provides real examples of when that was useful to him, and shows photos using that concept.

Just this weekend, I went to the Smokies and was able to use what I learned from this course to play around with my camera in manual mode. For comparison, I took some of the same shots with the auto settings on and was amazed at how much better color I was able to capture in manual mode!

I absolutely recommend this course for anyone looking to expand their photography knowledge or to pick it up as a new hobby.

Paul is an awesome teacher! He uses real life examples to make his presentations relevant, interesting and captivating. He engages his students with leading questions and is empathetic with the issues that all photographers encounter. This course is not lecture-style but rather a workshop with real people. I especially liked the short segments which invite re-visiting when I didn’t quite “get it” the first time through. I recommend this course not just for beginners but for experienced photographers who want a warm-up and some inspiration. I’m already looking forward to Paul’s next course.

There are so many aspects to this art of digital photography, that I think it is easy to get caught up in the moment of a shoot and forget some of the finer details of getting the best shot. This has been a wonderful review for me of things I already knew as well as also learning a couple of things I didn’t already know. I could easily come back and watch various segments of this course several times and still get something out of them.

I’ve played around with my Canon DSLRs for years but never got off the “Automatic” setting. My intentions were to learn photography but I didn’t begin the process. I bought the equipment, and the books but everything I did with my gear was amateurish.

Recently my XTi finally quit and I bought a T5i to replace it but something else happened as well. Immediately I found my old desire rekindled to learn the camera. I decided I would take some form of professional training and found “Photo Education for Outdoor Enthusiasts” here on Udemy to augment two more books that I bought specific to my T5i.

I’ve since completed the course and this was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. It was such an awesome learning experience… and it was exactly like being in the class. Paul Hassell, the instructor, is not just a well accomplished expert photographer, he’s also an outstanding teacher. I believe Paul’s passion for teaching equals his passion for the lens so I learned easily and joyfully.

I’m so impressed with my experience I felt compelled to leave a review here fitting my experience under Paul’s tutelage. If you can only take one course to learn how to take better pictures – to capture amazing moments that you’ll be proud to share… sign up now for “Photo Education for Outdoor Enthusiasts” you won’t regret it!

This is an excellent intro course. The first segment is extremely well done and “took me off the green button”. There are a couple times you can tell editing took out the explanation of a couple vocabulary words. Great energy and very engaging! The bonus lecture is a 6* life philosophy.

It is a great, neat, simple, clear and, what is most important, HIGHLY APPLICABLE course if you are a complete BEGINNER.
All the important things you need to know to get there and start shooting with confidence in full manual mode are given, without entering any unnecessary details.
The reason I’ve left 4,5/5 rating is that I’ve expected it to be more for the price so I recommend to wait for some special offers and buy the course because it will be helpful and a great jumpstart by all means!

Great course that covers all the basics a beginner/intermediate photographer needs. Perfect to just go back and refresh knowledge, in case you had a problem during your last outdoors photo session. Definitely recommend this course.

I really struggled sometimes with this course. The resources really didn’t really support the videos since all but one were just slides the intructor was using in that lecture. The short snippet format of each lecture left me with the feeling that the subject really wasn’t well covered. Whenever there was a question from one of the students in the classroom, I never really knew the question and was therefore not really able to tie the response to anything. And in almost every lecture, there would be something brought up about something that was covered previously in the class but not in a previous lecture which left me with the feeling there was probably a lot more that might have been presented, but wasn’t. Left me with an overall feeling of incompleteness.

I loved his style and method of teaching, I do think one boost to it could be like having actual work to be turned in such as go out take the 3 best photos you can submit them for others to view and comment on.
