What you’ll learn

  • By the end of the 4 week course you will understand how your Canon flash system works both on and off camera and wirelessly

Today’s Canon flashes are amazing pieces of gear. They are really powerful and you can create stunning images with them, once you know how they all work together with your camera. You basically have a studio set up in your camera bag, and you can use multiple flashes to create stunning visuals. I use them all the time in both my wedding/portraits, as well as commercial work.

The Canon flash system gives you so many options, and learning what options work best in certain situations can really make your photographic life easy.

This 4 week ONLINE workshop will consist of 4 weekly video classes, that you can watch at your own leisure.

Class 1: The Basic of Canon Flash

This class will cover your flash equipment and how it works. We will cover F-stop, shutter speed, and power output of your flash and how all 3 work together. We will also cover TTL/ETTL, auto and manual settings, and Sync Speed and how all of them work and when to use them.

Class 2: Using Flash On Camera

Use of your flash on camera. We will cover bounce flash, diffusers, bounce cards, fill flash. We will also cover how to bounce your flash to create stunning portraits.

Class 3: Canon Flash Off Camera

Did you know that most Canon cameras have a built in wireless flash system that allows you to shoot flash off camera?

We will cover how to create stunning imagery by getting your flash off of your camera using a TTL cord.

We will also cover how to use your built in wireless system to use your flash off camera.

Use of your zoom on your flash in combination with your flash off camera to create wonderful 40’s style glam lighting.

Class 4: Multiple Flashes, and use of wireless devices and filters

This class will cover the use of multiple flash techniques using your built in flash system.
We will also cover the use of wireless flash options, including the new Canon radio wave system.
We will also cover the use of gels with your flash to balance your flash with available light.

I really enjoyed learning about the different Canon speedlites and how to set them up in ETTL or Manual mode and how to change the different settings in the menus on the different flash models and transceiver. The Canon 600ex-rt Speedlite was new to me so and I really appreciated the lecture on how to link them together. One thing I missed was a lecture on how to choose and set up the different custom functions on the flashes.

This course had many lectures about the Radio Popper and how to mount them and use them, but I wish it also had some lectures about other options as well such as cheap manual triggers or the Pocket Wizards and how to use them in conjunctions with several speedlites from Canon or from other popular brands such as Phottix or Yongnuo.

The Outdoor shooting sessions was informative but it had a bit of background noise from passing cars and the shooting locations could have been set up somewhere else instead of an urban scene with fence and parking lots. I also wish we could have seen some model shots where your had set up multiple speedlites on lightstands with light modifiers to control the output and the quality of the light.

This video course consists of 81 lectures which last from under a minute and up to two-three minutes. I wish it was compiled together as a longer video segments instead of small fragments.

But overall, the course was worth the money and I’ll recommend it to my friends.

For Canon shooters, the lessons are short and right to the point. A reasonably complex subject is broken down into manageable, bite-sized (maybe nibble-sized) pieces that are clear and easy to apply. There are more advanced flash courses but this is a great one to start out with.

Great instructor and I love the coarse because he opened many door about how to use and understand my expensive flashes. Before this coarse my knowledge was less much than normal but now I’am back and use my flashes with all the experience I need and in case I forget somethings after while for not use the system, then I can go back to my library and use the coarse again as references. Great investments and is my forever to use it. Thanks kevin

    Learning stuff already !
Yes it gets better with the enthusiasm of the presenter !
Very interesting. It would be good to have a shot of the flash setting screen while he is making adjustments in those last classes however.

Simple, direct, no nonsense teaching for those who want to master speedlites without the complicated technical jargon most people are not interested in anyway. I learned more about my Canon speedlites in these short mini tutorials than from expensive workshoos I’ve attended.

The audio echo in the studio is a little off putting.
Each lesson is too short, it’s a little distracting to watch as it pauses to switch to the next lesson every 2 minutes on average, so there’s little flow in the course. Lecturer doesn’t answer Q&A, disappointing.

I LOVE how Kevin is explaining about each individual flash~~ You would think with how much hands on photography is…. that more photographers would show you like he does!!!! LOVE THIS
Love all his examples inside and outside

I wish every instructor would teach in these small sections….it grabs my attention more, I like when everything is broken up and explained in detailed and then shown~
If Kevin makes anymore more classes about photography, I will for sure be buying them!!

Not very professional. Did not explain many things especially high speed sync.

Course was too superficial and not at actual level of Canon tech (no EX430 iii RT and EX600 ii RT). Due to this omission, the course sometimes almost seemed to be an extendend RadioPopper commercial. Reshooting a 1 minute scene with coughing in the middle is not too much to ask for…Labelling this a 4 week course is not correct.

The content of the course so far is good although a bit advanced for beginners to grasp the terminology. The delivery is fast and comparing three flashes causes a bit of confusion.
