In this course “The Art of Figure to Ground” we will explore how to add layers to your photograph. Artists have used layers to tell stories in their images, but to make them work effectively we must fully understand the concept of Figure to Ground relationships. From street photography to portraiture, every layer is an opportunity to add something to your picture.

I very much enjoyed this course, but it was a build from a previous course. What was that course? It is not readily apparent. You feel like are sort of jumping in the middle of things. By the end you start to get it. The piece I feel I am missing, either from another course or perhaps just missed here is what to do with that knowledge of value from color once I am able to identify it. I learned a lot, I feel though as if I missed the take home message on how to apply this to my photographic process. Perhaps taken in the correct order would help. Now I have an idea of what to look for, I will try to see how this will influence my images. On another note, this course also not only adds value to better understanding photography but also the painted arts as well. Nicely done.

This course was interesting & valuable. Adam seems to teach by showing rather than telling, which is wonderful and what good artists do. I am still not positive that I learned what “figure to ground” means – maybe I am missing a prior lesson or episode and he covered it in a different course, but I still feel unclear on what it is. It’s a bit frustrating as that is what this course was titled and I was hoping for a clear understanding. Otherwise, this course gave me food for thought and I am excited to do the assignment. Would just love more clarity on the main topic!
